Nobel Peace Prize nominee Claudia Paz y Paz, the first female Attorney General of Guatemala, will be visiting George Mason. She will discuss the country’s effort to reconstruct its democratic institutions and pursue prosecutions of responsible perpetrators in order to combat the pervasive impunity which fuels violence and corruption within the country. Dr Paz y Paz has made unprecedented strides in the prosecution of organized crime, political corruption, and human rights abuses. Her efforts are at the center of a movement within Guatemala to overcome simmering conflicts lingering from years of civil war. She will be discussing these successes, along with the current obstacles, during her lecture on November 13th at 7:30 in Mason Hall, in the Meese Room.
