This course examines the history of colonial Spanish and Portuguese America from the pre-contact period to independence in the early 19th century. We will study Indigenous American empires, Spanish and Portuguese invasion and occupation, the trade in commodities such as cochineal and silver, colonial political and religious structures, and labor systems including slavery. Contact between Indigenous Americans, Africans, and Europeans is at the heart of all of these processes.
