Mason student Eleana Velasco worked with LAS professor Lisa Rabin on a study of the socio-cultural effects of last year's groundbreaking documentary “Con mi corazón en Yambo.” This film, directed by Fernanda Restrepo Arismendi, which deals with the disappearance of the director’s brothers at the hands of Ecuadorian state police in 1988, has become the most viewed Ecuadorian film production in the country’s history. In order to explore this socio-cultural phenomenon, over 400 Ecuadorians who viewed the documentary were surveyed in seven different cities. Velasco's analysis of this ethnography and interview with Restrepo reveal the ways this documentary is working as a social intervention upon Ecuadorian audiences, as well as its affective and political importance.
