Spanish announces speakers for 2024-25 SHLE lecture series

The Spanish section is happy to announce the speakers for the 2024-25 Spanish Heritage Language Education online lecture series. The online lecture series, now in its fourth year, brings cutting-edge, critical scholarship to hundreds of in-service and pre-service language educators and researchers in Virginia and across the country, as well as to students and faculty at George Mason.

This year's series features three experts in heritage language learning and teaching. On October 16, Dr. Alicia Luque will discuss the monolingual bias in language learning research, present studies demonstrating that bilinguals are not just 'two monolinguals in one,' and suggest a new way forward in both research and pedagogy. In her March 25 lecture, Dr. Lillie Padilla will critically analyze the historical absence of Afro-Latinxs in Spanish language curricula and explore how representation is crucial for inclusive, equitable language education. The final lecture will take place on April 8, when Dr. Josh Prada delves into the concept of translanguaging, exploring both the theoretical and practical implications of this approach to multilingualism, as well as the ways that language teachers can apply it in language pedagogy and classroom management.

All lectures are free and open to the public but registration is required. Registration links are provided on the description of each talk, accessible from the SHLE online lecture series page.

Feel free to download and share the SHLE lecture series flyer.
