Major in Latin American Studies
The Latin American Studies major course offerings integrate many disciplines across campus, including anthropology, dance, economics, folklore, geography, government, history, and Latin American literature. Students gain broad expertise in the region as they pursue more concentrated programs of study on such topics as popular and ethnic cultures, the revolutionary political movements of the twentieth century, Afro-Caribbean dance, and the effects of globalization today.
A team-taught introductory course exposes students to George Mason's varied course offerings in Latin American Studies. Students then devise their own programs in consultation with the program director. Finally, a research seminar allows seniors to synthesize the knowledge and skills they have acquired and to pursue a significant research project on a topic of their choice.
