Latin American Studies: Interdisciplinary Perspectives

This course is an interdisciplinary introduction to Latin American Studies. In the course we will examine Latin American history, culture, and society, as well as the different approaches, methodologies, and concepts related to the study of Latin America. We will explore the experiences that shaped Latin America as a region, how the region impacts and is impacted by globalization, and the experience and role of Latino/as in the United States. The course will include guest lectures by LAS faculty, and will engage Latin America through primary documents, social science research, film, literature and art.
Priority registration for LAS majors and minors, but open to all students. No prerequisites. This course fulfills the CHSS non-western requirement. Note to majors: This course replaces LAS 100.
